The Thinking Machine

Stephen Witt

Loved it. Three things:

  • The grit Jensen has.
  • The luck Nvidia had.
  • The writing style of the author.

Supremacy

Parmy Olson

The entire OpenAI story. Too early (March 2024) to really cover Anthropic and the rest, but it gives a good understanding of the thinking logic behind those companies.

Empire of AI

Karen Hao

Not a big fan. It tells the OpenAI story, but tries to see negatives everywhere. I get that there are tradeoffs — this one feels like it is looking to predict everything bad that can happen.

Same as Ever

Morgan Housel

A good book about what will stay the same in us as humans and as a society. Our DNA will not change as quickly as the technology around us. Those insights will likely hold true until I die.

Brief Answers to the Big Questions

Stephen Hawking

Hawking is able to describe really, really complex astro things so simply that I can understand them. He also deduces everything from first principles, which I think makes sense.

The Universe

Andrew Cohen

Mind-boggling book that goes into the depths of the universe. Once you read it, you see how unimportant most of the things are that you actually do.

Empires of the Sky

Alexander Rose

The best book about Zeppelins and airplanes, and why Pan Am and airplanes actually won. Still sad that we are not flying in airships across the Atlantic today.
